If you’ve ever pulled apart a go-kart, you’ll know the rebuild process starts long before any parts go back on the chassis. It starts with cleaning—and a lot of it.
In Part 1 of this rebuild series, I’ll take you through how I restored my tired old GX UK kart steering wheel and tackled the mountain of grubby metal components. From degreasing to polishing, here's everything I used (and learned) along the way.
🧼 Why Clean Before You Build?
A clean kart is:
- Easier to work on
- More reliable
- Quicker to inspect for damage
And yes, lighter, too—grime adds grams!
Whether you're doing a full chassis overhaul or just some seasonal maintenance, cleaning your kart thoroughly makes everything from reassembly to future servicing much easier.
🧷 Step 1: Restoring a Worn Go-Kart Steering Wheel
If you’re asking yourself, “How do I restore an old go-kart steering wheel without replacing it?” — you’re in the right place. A brand-new wheel can cost a small fortune, but with the right tools, a few products, and a bit of effort, you can get yours looking and feeling great again.
My wheel had yellowed, lost its grip, and was wrapped in grubby tape. Here’s how I brought it back to life:
🧰 Tools & Products Used:
- AutoGlym Leather Cleaner (£7–10)
- Stanley Knife (for removing old grip)
- Degreaser (I used Elbow Grease, but Gunk or Muc-Off works too)
- Distilled Vinegar + Bicarbonate of Soda (DIY deep cleaner)
- RackX Tennis Racket Grip Tape (£6–£10 on Amazon)
- Red Electrical Tape (for end-finishing, optional)
🧽 Cleaning Process:
- Cut away the old grip tape with care.
- Wipe down the wheel with degreaser and a sponge.
- Use leather cleaner to scrub the synthetic covering.
- Optional deep clean: mix bicarb and vinegar into a paste and apply to heavy dirt.
- Let it dry thoroughly overnight.
🌀 Rewrapping:
I used RackX tennis grip tape to wrap the wheel. It’s self-adhesive, grippy, and far cheaper than karting-specific grips. I finished the ends with red electrical tape for a tidy look.
💡 Tip: Buy two rolls to ensure full coverage—you don’t want to run out halfway.
🔩 Step 2: Cleaning Metal Parts and Hubs
Wondering, “What’s the best way to clean the metal parts on a go-kart?” You’ve come to the right blog. Whether you’re scrubbing down hubs, spacers, or old bolts, giving your metalwork a deep clean makes rebuilding easier and helps spot cracks, rust, or damage before it’s too late.
Here’s how I tackled my kart’s greasy, worn-out components:
🧰 Tools & Products Used:
- GT85 Spray Lubricant (£6–£9)
- AutoGlym Resin Polish (£10–£15)
- Degreaser
- Toothbrush (for detail cleaning)
- 2000 Grit Sandpaper (£5–£10 for a pack)
- Zip Lock Bags (for post-clean storage)
🧽 Method:
- Spray everything with degreaser.
- Use a toothbrush to work it into corners and threads.
- Polish with 2000 grit sandpaper and degreaser as lubrication.
- Wipe dry, then coat with GT85 to protect from rust.
- Shine key pieces with AutoGlym Resin Polish.
Once cleaned, I sealed each group of parts in zip lock bags so they’d stay fresh and ready for rebuild.
🔧 Bonus Tip: Removing Bearings with Heat
Struggling with stuck front hub bearings? You’re not alone. Instead of hammering them out, try this trick: use your oven.
Just preheat to around 200°C and pop the hubs in for a few minutes. The metal expands, loosening the bearings for easy removal.
⚠️ Safety first—use oven gloves, and don’t leave them unattended.
This simple heat trick saved me a lot of time and effort.
🧽 Step 3: Deep Cleaning the Side Pods
If you’re wondering, “How do I get my side pods white again?”—this one’s for you. These parts take a beating from grime and rubber scuffs, and regular cleaners won’t cut it. I wanted mine spotless before applying a new sticker kit, so I took it a step further.
🧰 Tools & Products Used:
- Electric Sander (£20–£30 – mine was from Lidl)
- High Grit Sandpaper Sheets (1000+)
- Degreaser Spray
⚙️ Method:
- Degrease the pod surfaces first.
- Use an electric sander with light pressure to lift stains and scuffs.
- Repeat as needed until the plastic returns to a clean white.
This method is fast and gives a great finish. You could use thinners or hand-sanding, but that’ll take hours. The sander makes light work of it.
🧼 Final Thoughts: Why It’s Worth the Effort
You could slap your kart back together dirty—but it’ll be harder to work on, easier to miss faults, and won’t look nearly as good. Taking the time to clean each part not only helps performance but also gives you pride in what you're building.
This clean foundation sets us up for Part 2: rebuilding the front end and jigging the chassis.

Materials for a steering-wheel refresh
Choose supplies for the material and task described in the article. Start with the least aggressive cleaning method and check the product instructions before treating an older wheel or a coated metal part.

Leather cleaner
An option to investigate for suitable leather surfaces. Check the wheel material first and test an inconspicuous area; a cleaner intended for leather is not automatically suitable for suede or Alcantara.

For controlled finishing where the article calls for fine abrasion. Confirm the surface and desired finish before sanding: abrasion can remove coatings as well as marks.
