High-speed action awaits in Cumbria & Westmoreland.

Cumbria offers a landscape of extremes. In the west, you will find one of the most technical and picturesque outdoor tracks in the world—a training ground for future Formula 1 champions. For indoor racers, the coast offers a weather-proof petrol challenge. However, for those in the south (Kendal and Barrow), the county is a "karting desert" requiring a bit of travel.

The undisputed jewel of the region is Rowrah (Cumbria Kart Racing Club). Located near Whitehaven in a disused quarry, this 1,030m outdoor circuit is legendary in motorsport circles. It is where Lewis Hamilton and George Russell honed their skills. While primarily an Owner-Driver club, it does run specific "Arrive & Drive" rental sessions (often on Monday evenings or selected weekends). Because it is a professional MSA circuit, the track is grippy, undulating, and incredibly technical. For a more accessible "turn up and race" experience, West Coast Karting in Maryport is the county's primary indoor venue. It claims to be the largest indoor track in the North West (at 520m) and runs a fleet of 200cc petrol karts. It is the go-to destination for stag dos and rainy days in the Lake District, offering a classic indoor petrol vibe with a bridge and tunnel layout. A Note for South Cumbria (Barrow/Kendal): Residents in the south face a challenge. There are no commercial kart tracks in Barrow-in-Furness or Kendal. From Barrow: Do not be fooled by maps showing Blackpool is "19 miles away"—that is across the water! The drive is nearly 2 hours. Your best option is to head north up the coast to Rowrah (approx. 50 mins). From Kendal: You are often best served by heading south down the M6 to TeamSport Preston (approx. 35 mins), which offers a high-tech electric alternative to the Cumbrian tracks.

Go karting in Cumbria & Westmoreland - FAQs

Common questions about finding a race in the Lakes and Cumbria.

Yes, but not every day. Rowrah is primarily a racing club for people who own their own karts. However, they run "Let's Go Karting" sessions and corporate events using a rental fleet (usually Monday evenings or pre-booked groups). You must check their calendar/Facebook page first.

No. The strict planning laws of the National Park mean there are no petrol go-kart tracks in the central Lakes. Visitors usually travel to West Coast Karting in Maryport (approx. 40 mins from Keswick) for an indoor race.

Residents of Barrow should head north to Rowrah or Maryport. While Blackpool looks close on a map, the drive around Morecambe Bay takes too long. Rowrah is under an hour away and offers a world-class experience.

West Coast Karting (Maryport) operates a fleet of petrol karts. This is a key selling point for drivers who prefer the mechanical feel and sound over electric alternatives.

Kendal has no local track. The quickest option is often to jump on the M6 South to TeamSport Preston (approx. 30-40 mins). Alternatively, heading north to Rowrah takes about 1 hour 15 mins but offers a spectacular outdoor experience.
