An onboard camera can give you something useful to discuss after a session: where the kart went, the line you took and how a passing opportunity developed. Start with the footage you actually want to watch. A clear, repeatable view is more useful than a headline resolution you never use. These are established models to compare, not a claim to cover every current camera or identify a tested winner.

Research-based comparison, not a hands-on review. How we assessed these products.

Which option suits you?

Shortlist the HERO13 Black if its 5.3K recording and GoPro accessories fit your plans; the Action 5 Pro if 4K recording and built-in storage appeal; or the Ace Pro 2 if you also want a flip-screen camera for paddock filming. Decide after checking total kit cost and your venue’s recording policy.

GoPro HERO13 Black

Published specification: 5.3K60 and 4K120 video; HyperSmooth 6.0

A sensible shortlist for editing flexibility, provided you budget for the complete GoPro kit.

The HERO13 makes most sense when you have a clear use for its recording options or already understand the GoPro accessory system. Extra resolution can give an editor room to reframe a shot; it does not automatically make a session easier to analyse.

Price the camera with the batteries and permitted mount you actually need. For a driver who only wants to watch a few laps back on a phone, a more modest recording setting may be the practical choice.

Pros

  • 5.3K capture provides scope for reframing footage.
  • Documented high-frame-rate options for selected recording modes.

Cons and limitations

  • Battery compatibility needs checking even for existing GoPro owners.
  • Accessories can change the value of the headline camera price.

Drivers wanting 4K recording with an internal-storage option

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

DJI · Osmo Action 5 Pro camera

Published specification: 4K up to 120fps; 47GB usable built-in storage

An appealing option if a storage fallback matters more to you than recording above 4K.

The Action 5 Pro offers 47GB of usable internal storage alongside its memory-card workflow. That gives you another place to record if you arrive without your usual card, although it still needs enough free space for the session.

Its appeal here is practical rather than a claim of superior image quality. Work out how you will copy footage, charge batteries and use the supported stabilisation modes before deciding which bundle represents good value.

Pros

  • Usable built-in storage offers an alternative to a card.
  • 4K recording includes high-frame-rate options.

Cons and limitations

  • Internal storage is finite and needs managing.
  • Published maximum runtime does not establish endurance in your chosen mode.

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

Insta360 · Ace Pro 2 camera

Insta360 Ace Pro 2
Product image; colour and package contents may vary. Image source for Insta360 Ace Pro 2.

Published specification: 8K recording options and a flip touchscreen

Worth considering when paddock filming is as important as the onboard view.

The flip touchscreen gives the Ace Pro 2 a distinct reason to appear on this shortlist: composing a piece to camera away from the track. Whether that is useful depends on how much of your filming happens outside the kart.

Treat 8K as an optional workflow, not the deciding number. Check the modes you intend to use and whether your editing setup can handle the resulting files. We have not compared its footage with the other cameras under matched conditions.

Pros

  • Flip touchscreen suits checking framing while filming yourself.
  • A choice of high-resolution recording modes.

Cons and limitations

  • 8K adds storage and editing demands.
  • Headline features do not all operate in every mode.

Choose the footage before the camera

For reviewing a session, decide whether you need an uninterrupted recording or a few selected clips. For sharing, think about horizontal and vertical edits. Higher resolution creates more material to store and edit; it is not automatically more useful. Check the exact combination of resolution, frame rate and stabilisation in the manufacturer’s documentation, rather than assuming every advertised feature operates together.

Budget for a complete recording kit

Compare the camera, an approved mounting arrangement, a compatible memory card and any spare batteries as one purchase. Existing accessories may make staying with a brand sensible, but confirm the precise battery and mount generation. The three manufacturers’ accessories are not interchangeable just because the cameras have a similar shape.

Check with the circuit first

Ask the operator or organiser whether cameras are allowed and which mounting arrangements they accept before buying a mount. A generic action-camera accessory is not evidence of approval for a helmet or kart. For useful comparisons between sessions, aim to keep the permitted camera position and recording settings consistent.

Before you buy

  • Confirm the venue or organiser’s camera policy and permitted mounts.
  • Check recording modes, storage and battery requirements for your intended session length.
  • Compare complete bundles and seller details, not just the camera name.

Our verdict

Choose the camera around the footage you will use. The HERO13 is worth investigating for editing flexibility, the Action 5 Pro for its internal-storage option, and the Ace Pro 2 for mixed track and paddock filming. The final decision should include a permitted mount, storage, batteries and an editing workflow you are willing to maintain.
