Indoor and outdoor karting excitement in Waikato.

The Waikato region offers two of the most distinct karting experiences in New Zealand. In Hamilton, the focus is on "Drift Karting"—a driving style invented right here in the city that prioritizes car control over pure grip. Just north of the city in Te Kauwhata, Hampton Downs offers a premium outdoor experience on a track that sits alongside one of the country's most significant car racing circuits.

For those in Hamilton, the go-to destination is Blastacars in Frankton. This is the birthplace of the drift kart concept. Unlike standard indoor tracks that use grippy asphalt, Blastacars features a specialized slippery surface and karts with a unique chassis design. This forces drivers to slide ("drift") through corners rather than driving a traditional racing line. For experienced drivers, they offer a 390cc "Pro" kart option (Black Card required) that provides immense power for maintaining high-speed drifts. Just 20-30 minutes north on the Waikato Expressway is Hampton Downs Go Karts. While technically serving both Auckland and Hamilton, it is the region's premier outdoor gas kart facility. The 530m track features elevation changes and a high-grip surface, running 270cc karts capable of 70 km/h. It is a true "driver's track" where lap times are determined by bravery on the brakes and precision in the corners. The Club Scene: Waikato is also a stronghold for professional karting. KartSport Hamilton (near the Airport) and KartSport Tokoroa are two of the country's top club tracks. While they do not offer daily rentals for the public, they host regular "Have a Go" days where you can book a session to try a proper 2-stroke race kart, serving as a pathway for those wanting to join the sport.

Go karting in Waikato - FAQs

Common questions about karting in Waikato.

No. There are no commercial outdoor rental tracks within the Hamilton city limits. The nearest outdoor rental facility is Hampton Downs Go Karts, located about 20-30 minutes north on State Highway 1.

Not on a daily basis. KartSport Hamilton (Ohaupo Road) is a private club for kart owners. However, they do run specific "Have a Go" days where the public can pay to test drive competition equipment.

Standard go-karts are designed for grip, using rubber tires on asphalt to go as fast as possible around a corner. Blastacars are designed for drift, using harder tires and a slippery surface to keep the kart sideways. It is a different driving discipline entirely.
