About Hampton Downs Go Karts
Hampton Downs is a world-class motorsport destination. Situated right on the Waikato Expressway (SH1) between Auckland and Hamilton, this massive complex hosts everything from the New Zealand Grand Prix to V8 Supercars. The Go-Kart track sits prominently within the facility, offering the public a taste of the action. Unlike flat parking-lot tracks, the 530m circuit is undulating, featuring significant elevation changes and a "blind" crest that adds a serious adrenaline kick. With a fleet of high-powered Sodi karts and a backdrop of professional race cars testing on the main circuit, it is the premier karting experience in the North Island.

Detailed guide
The Track Layout
The track is famous for being physical and fast.
- Elevation: The circuit is built into the rolling Waikato hills. You will face uphill climbs that test the engine's torque and downhill sweeping corners where you pick up serious speed.
- Length: The main rental track is 530 meters long.
- Surface: Professional-grade asphalt (high grip).
- Atmosphere: Because it is part of a major race track, you often hear the roar of GT3 cars or drift machines on the adjacent National Circuit while you race.
The Karts
Hampton Downs uses the industry-standard Sodi petrol karts.
- Single Karts (Sodi RT8): Powered by 270cc Honda engines (9hp). These are robust, fast (up to 70km/h), and feature adjustable pedals.
- Tandem Karts (2-Seater): A great feature for families. An adult (16+) can drive while a passenger (6+) sits alongside. This is perfect for kids who are too young or short to drive alone but want the thrill of speed.
Other Activities
- The "Mad Lab": The facility is home to Mad Mike Whiddett's shop (Red Bull drift legend), where you can sometimes see his rotary-powered Mazda drift cars on display.
- V8 Experiences: If karting isn't enough, you can book "Muscle Car" laps in a V8 Mustang or Camaro on the main circuit.
- Café: The on-site café offers great food and coffee with a view of the track.
