The Track Layout
The circuit at K1 Speed St. Catharines is designed to test driver skill rather than just raw speed.
- Tech Specs: The track measures approximately 1/4 mile and features a technical mix of tight hairpins and acceleration zones.
- Surface: Unlike outdoor asphalt, the track uses a specialized high-grip resin surface. This ensures consistent traction and allows the electric karts to deliver their instant torque without wheelspin.
- Safety: The circuit is lined with the Protex barrier system, the safest in the industry, which absorbs impact effectively while keeping the race going.
The Karts
K1 Speed is famous for its high-performance electric fleet. These machines offer instant acceleration (torque) that gas karts simply can't match.
- Adult Karts (OTL Storm): For drivers at least 58 inches (147 cm) tall. These 20-horsepower machines can reach speeds of up to 72 kph (45 mph).
- Junior Karts: For drivers at least 48 inches (122 cm) tall. These karts are physically smaller and speed-capped at approximately 32 kph (20 mph) to ensure safety for younger racers.
- Safety Control: All karts can be remotely slowed down or stopped by the track marshals in case of an accident, ensuring the safest possible racing environment.
